Rutka 教授毕业于普林斯顿大学（1975-1977年）和女王大学医学院（1977-1981年）。1992年进入多伦多大学神经外科培训班。他的训练包括在旧金山加利福尼亚大学的脑肿瘤研究中心的奖学金项目，同时获得了实验病理学的博士学位（1984-1987年）。
1989年，Rutka 教授在名古屋大学的 Kenichiro Sugita 博士下完成血管神经外科显微手术的奖学金研究，之后在东京顺天堂大学完成博士后分子免疫学的奖学金研究（1990年）。
